DIY Paper Rosette Cupcake Tutorial

Cupcakes are a party favorite and the only thing better than a cupcake is a cupcake with a nicely decorated topper!

Ever wondered how the paper fans/rosettes are created that I often use to decorate cupcake toppers?

You can find them in my many styled parties and I’m happy to share with you just how I make these so you can too!

Required Supplies (click on the supplies to buy these items yourself):

Here is a great YouTube video to watch and see the assembly step by step!

Tim Holtz Paper Rosette with the Sizzix Big Shot

Sizzix Big Shot and Paper Rosette Die-Cut

My die-cut is well used!

Cut your patterned papers into strips.  It is best to use 12″ paper strips but you can also use printed patterned papers from the party sets.  The medallion die cut will be just shy of complete so I just use a circular paper punch for the that instead.

Run your die cut through the Big Shot.  Start with the extended spacer on the bottom, then 1 strip cutting pad, then the die-cut face up, then the paper and lastly the 2nd strip cutting pad on top.  Roll the die through the Big Shot.

Remove the die cut paper rosette and proceed to accordion fold the long scallop piece along the perforated lines.  On one end, dab some hot glue or double sided tape.

Roll the  paper into a cylinder and glue the two ends of the scallops together.

On a flat surface, gather the flat side of the cylinder tight together while spreading and pushing down on the top to create the rosette.

Turn your rosette over and glue the medallion to the back side.  You can use double sided tape, but I recommend hot glue to ensure your rosette remains study.

Add a 2″ cupcake topper to the front side of the paper rosette, again using double sided tape or hot glue.   Lastly, add a lollipop stick to the back side of the paper rosette and pop your decorated cupcake topper into your cupcake!

I hope you recreate the paper rosette cupcake topper in your next party!

Here are a few other examples of how I used paper rosettes to decorate!

Because two of my boys are born on the same day, I combined their birthday celebration but to make it fair, they each got their own cake!  Karlo chose the Kitkat cake as I was pinning inspiration on Pinterest.  The Kitkat bars attached easily and the ‘caution’ tape nicely secured everything in place.  I topped the cake with Oreo crumbs and some chocolate rocks (this was a choclate lovers dream cake) and to be honest, the assembly was far easier than I expected.

We have a favorite chocolate cake mix that is tried and true in our home and I am so grateful to Amanda from i am baker because she transformed me from box cake star to homemade and from scratch diva!  Here is the recipe for ‘The Perfect Chocolate Cake’.

I purchased the ‘nuts & bolts’ mold on Amazon.com and the process of making the chocolate treats was so easy.  First, I melted the wafers I bought at Micheal’s in the microwave, stopping to mix everything thirty seconds.  Once melted, I poured the chocolate into a Wilton squeeze tube and filled the molds which went right into the fridge to set.  It took several batches, but I think they turned out so good!

To make the ‘paint brushes’ I skewed the prepackaged Rice Krispie Treats and then dipped them in melted chocolate.  Letting the melted chocolate drip down only made them look more like wet paint brushes.  The paint can was purchased at the Home Depot and I wrapped it in two sheets of patterned papers which are included in the party package.  Taping the ‘wet paint’ sign was the the perfect final touch!

I decided to line the envelopes with some of the patterned papers.  It was a simple detail, but one that made the invite more custom.

These name cards/food labels are meant to look like the caution street signs.  I created a short video on my Instagram to show this easy diy, here.  If you aren’t already following me, find me @taniasdesignstudio.

I love having the ‘birthday facts’ on the water bottle labels!  So many guests have been fooled by the labeling and once they read the ‘Percentage DV based on happy kids’ they can’t help but smile.

Evon of Cookievonster is a master at her craft!  I often have to tell guests to go ahead and take a cookie as they can’t believe I would let them eat one, let alone touch them!
