Gone Fishing Cake Topper Tutorial

My ‘Gone Fishing’ set is certainly one of my top sellers and I do get questions daily about how to assemble the cake topper.  I designed this cake topper with the thought of taking a simple homemade cake and transforming it into something super cute with just a few simple paper designs.  I see many copycat cake toppers, but folks, this is very original design!

Required materials:

  1. Gone Fishing cake topper printable, available here
  2. Scissors
  3. Glue gun
  4. 3 bamboo sticks
  5. Bakers Twine (available at many dollar stores)
  6. Oreo crumbs
  7. Several blades of plastic grass (purchased small grass pot at Target and cut what I need)

Cut out the four fish and the fishing sign from the printable file you purchased from my Etsy shop!  If you want to make a longer line of fish, simply print off two copies of the file and string more fish!  Next, cut approximately 10 inches of bakers twine and tie a loop knot to one end, string the bamboo stick and then do the same for the other end.

Take each individual fish and turn it over to dab just a bit of hot glue to the tip of its mouth and quickly adhere to the bakers twine.  Tip: to ensure even spacing of the fish, I recommend laying them down as you like on the twine before gluing.

Next, turn the fishing sign over and glue the third bamboo stick to the back side.

Here you see the Oreo crumbs and plastic blades of grass.  You will want to pour anywhere from quarter to half a cup of the crumbs onto the center of your cake.  I then inserted the fishing sign, just slightly slanted.  Next, insert the two fishing line bamboo sticks just behind the sign and be sure not to insert to far so you cover the fish with the sign. The final touch are the plastic blades of grass.

If you are interested in more than just the cake topper a full party package is available too!

All the best!

Prepare to get bulldozed with this Construction Party because this it is LOADED with creative ideas!  My boy’s and their crew were in hard hat heaven with adorable themed treats, creative signs and classic work zone decorations like caution tape, construction cones, yield signs and more! So let’s DIG IN!

My favorite details are:

  • “Caution” wrapped Kitkat cakes
  • Toolbox lunches + “Under Construction” chocolate bars

  • Chocolate “Nuts & Bolts”
  • Custom hard hats + personalized place cards
  • Amazing cookie art by Cookievonster

Because two of my boys are born on the same day, I combined their birthday celebration but to make it fair, they each got their own cake!  Karlo chose the Kitkat cake as I was pinning inspiration on Pinterest.  The Kitkat bars attached easily and the ‘caution’ tape nicely secured everything in place.  I topped the cake with Oreo crumbs and some chocolate rocks (this was a choclate lovers dream cake) and to be honest, the assembly was far easier than I expected.

We have a favorite chocolate cake mix that is tried and true in our home and I am so grateful to Amanda from i am baker because she transformed me from box cake star to homemade and from scratch diva!  Here is the recipe for ‘The Perfect Chocolate Cake’.

IMG_0629 IMG_0664

I purchased the ‘nuts & bolts’ mold on Amazon.com and the process of making the chocolate treats was so easy.  First, I melted the wafers I bought at Micheal’s in the microwave, stopping to mix everything thirty seconds.  Once melted, I poured the chocolate into a Wilton squeeze tube and filled the molds which went right into the fridge to set.  It took several batches, but I think they turned out so good!

IMG_0672 IMG_0673 IMG_0701

To make the ‘paint brushes’ I skewed the prepackaged Rice Krispie Treats and then dipped them in melted chocolate.  Letting the melted chocolate drip down only made them look more like wet paint brushes.  The paint can was purchased at the Home Depot and I wrapped it in two sheets of patterned papers which are included in the party package.  Taping the ‘wet paint’ sign was the the perfect final touch!

IMG_0725

I decided to line the envelopes with some of the patterned papers.  It was a simple detail, but one that made the invite more custom.

IMG_0717As always the blank thank you notes are included with every party package.

IMG_0730 IMG_0732 IMG_0746IMG_0646IMG_0729

I prefer to wrap Smarties boxes with the chocolate bar wrappers as it is a nice neat fit!

IMG_0790

Each guest had his/her own ‘toolbox treats’ which was filled with all sorts of yummy sweets to keep them fueled up for all the work at this job site!

IMG_0793 IMG_0795 IMG_0806

Kids table setup!
Using black paper to as a table runner, I added some white strips to pave the road!

IMG_0810 IMG_0842

Hard Hat Area : I got a set of 12 for under 10$ on Amazon.com!

IMG_0852IMG_1344 IMG_0858 IMG_0860

The ‘caution’ tape can be used anywhere you can think of! I decided to add some extra detail to the cake platter~

Clean up crew, aka party mom, was needed in job site: kids table!

These name cards/food labels are meant to look like the caution street signs.  I created a short video on my Instagram to show this easy diy, here.  If you aren’t already following me, find me @taniasdesignstudio.

Jenga is a perfect game for the budding builder! Except this game was enjoyed by all the adults best!

IMG_1249

Pylon Ring Toss game, signage and points printables are included in the set!

IMG_1260 IMG_1267 IMG_1293

Niko has a pair of PJs that match the theme, just bought them at Carter’s!

IMG_1347 IMG_1358 IMG_1370 IMG_1387

I love having the ‘birthday facts’ on the water bottle labels!  So many guests have been fooled by the labeling and once they read the ‘Percentage DV based on happy kids’ they can’t help but smile.

IMG_1396 IMG_1418

Evon of Cookievonster is a master at her craft!  I often have to tell guests to go ahead and take a cookie as they can’t believe I would let them eat one, let alone touch them!

IMG_1435 IMG_1436 IMG_1452 IMG_1466 IMG_1484

Ain’t that the truth!  Terrible twos in full swing~

IMG_1497 IMG_1531

Karlo and Niko’s construction crew were such hard workers

Happy birthday to these fine young men, mama will always think you job is well done :)

Beautiful pastel colors are my favorites in designing a little girl’s party. This year, I used a mixture of pastel colors at Mia’s butterfly tea party and loved the result. Everything looked elegant and perfect. You’ll see lots of butterflies, flowers, and greens. The girls all felt very special and grown up sitting around having their tea and desserts.
